Fire ants are terrible here in Houston although (knock on wood), we haven't had many mounds this year...yet.
Copperheads are prevalent but we don't have anything in the yard they could go under besides the porch and our wooden shed. I keep the dogs away from those areas. We had ferns growing next to the porch a few years ago and when I went outside one day I saw a shed copperhead skin on one of the fronds...needless to say, that fall, they were torn up.
