Yes, the AKC standard calls for "a well-rounded apple-dome skull, with
our without molera". So, the "apple-headed" Chis are more within the Chihuahua
breed standard than the "deer-headed" ones. If you ever watch an AKC
conformation show, you will see that the Chihuahuas shown look very different
than most pet Chihuahuas out there. Some breeders who breed strickly for pets
don't go by the standard and so a lot of the Chihuahua look has changed
throughout the years. Not that we don't love them all the same, no matter what
they look like! But all dog breeds need to have a standard so that a Chihuahua
will look like a Chihuahua and a Pug will look like a Pug and so on, and so on.

It has to do with breeding and breeding outside the breed standards

Has anyone ever heard a theory or a fact on why they have either
apple heads or deer heads? Or why they're not just all apple heads or all deer
heads? (My chi lack of knowledge showing again. LOL)

You know, before we adopted Jaelyn I'd read tons of books on
Chihuahuas and visited tons of websites to try to learn all I could about them
and make sure they were the right breed for us... and it wasn't until the day
she arrived and still up to this day that I realize I still don't really know
anything about them compared to all the knowledge that's out there. LOL

Missie, Luna and Coconut have the deer heads - Jaz and Turbo have
the apple heads.

            How that helps!
