Subject: [Chihuahuas] Hello

Hi group. I've just joined for a very specific reason. I'm considering
taking over the loving responsibility of a 10yr old, diabetic chihuahua. Her
owner is leaving for the armed forces in Nov. and due to the dogs illness, she
now can't find anybody to provide temporary care for Chalupa. She has decided
with great sadness, to find a new permanent home. I expressed interest, and now
she want's me to be her new owner. I've spent hours and hours researching about
Chalupa's illness, and found a site that recommended to join here. She
presently
requires 2 shots per day. She has been diagnosed for 12 months now.

I'm aware of the costs involved, but I want to ask here, some very pointed
questions, and hopefully somebody will be able to answer them for me.

Outside of the twice daily insulin shots, what else should I expect. Is she
going to require weekly Vet visits. Is it a given, that she will suffer from
cataracts, and blindness. Will I need to do my own urine and blood tests for
her, and how often. Being a Chi, I'm aware how sensitive they are to upheaval
at
the best of times. I feel HORRIBLE for both dog and owner in having to go
through this. Spending 10yrs together...I'm worried about emotional upset,
causing real physical problems and setbacks with Chalupa's health. Do you think
I may be biting off more than I can chew so to speak. I've made inquiries about
pet insurance, but of course, they don't cover pre-existing conditions. I
really
don't know what to do, but I want to help. Any insight would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks. Jenny
