Ellen, My vet did not make us use a cone on any of my dogs and they never bothered their surgical sites at all. So if it bothers her try taking it off and just see. Abbey, Sami, Ari never touched or licked their stitches. But Maggie.... well she will probably be different. We are just to glad that it is over and it is all up hill from now on. Abbey only needed her pain meds for 3 days and then she acted fine. I think the second day was the worst as the anesthesia that they put inside wears off. But they are pretty tough, a lot more braver than we are. I will be going through it in three months and will need everyone to help me as I will also be a nervous wreck!
