Most of the deer headed Chi's have a much longer muzzle and they don't have
that dome shape skull. Many times they are large Chi's with longer legs and
a slimmer body. Many also have very large ears.
Where as a Apple head, has a smaller and more compact, muscular body. The
muzzle is more pressed in, and the skull has a dome shape to it. The Apple
head's to my knowledge were the original Chi's which is why AKC only
recognizes them.
Many times you may see pictures of a Chi that doesn't look like a true Apple
Head or a true Deer Head. In fact the same thing occurs in the long hairs
and the short hairs, some are neither true long hairs nor true short hairs.
We can blame the faults of the breed on PMs and backyard breeders for
spreading them around for so many years. It's just poor breeding. They are
all real Chihuahuas though.
My Gigi is a perfect example of neither being a true apple head or a true
deer head, or a true long hair or a true short hair. She is in between the
two. Perhaps she had a apple head, long hair for a momma, and a deer head,
short hair for a daddy?
These pics should show you the difference between the two:
Deer Head
Apple Head

Subject: [Chihuahuas] I have a question
I have heard the terms deer head and apple head bandied about. I have
googled it and I am still confused by their explanation. Can someone on
this group explain the difference and/or post pictures so I can maybe see
what the difference is? I am a visual person so that might help. Thanks.
