Desi had a collar and a harness. The collar stayed on him all of the time and I put the harness on him when going for a walk. The only other place that he wore the harness was in the booster seat in the car. I think I do remember trying to figure out why he wouldn’t walk on the leash and one thing that I did think about was maybe the harness was uncomfortable on the muscles that he had to use to walk. I still walk him on the harness, but he has learned to get used to it. Both Dolly & Desi have vest-type harnesses that close on the top to wear in the car. Both of mine are used to wearing clothes all the time, and so I do think that if you get the puppy to wear even a little tank top or tshirt then after she is used to that, then put on a vest type harness before trying to take her for a walk. Let her get used to the vest harness in the house for a while before you attach the leash. Then let her run around the house with the harness and the leash and then slowly pick up the leash as she walks around the house and then she might be ready to walk outside. If she doesn't mind being dressed, I can't imagine her not liking that type. I remember in the video that she wasn't to happy with a dress on. But what I did notice, or atleast it appeared to me that way in the video is that the dress covered her tail, and that may be why she didn't like it? Because she could feel something on her tail and most dogs don't like that. Using a coupler (holds two leashes) is great, as long as both dogs already know how to walk side by side. It's not so great when one of them has to do their business, as it doesn't give them enough room. It is for when you want to walk two dogs only. It is true that the best way to get a dog use to a leash, is to let them wear it around the house, and then graduate them to a fenced in area and let them drag the leash around some more. I also have to admit that I have not been good about putting collars on them in the house as they both just itch and itch when ever they have one on as they do not have a lot of hair around their necks, I have tried 3 different harnesses and a zillion collars so that maybe part of the problem too. So I am going to put their collars and leashes on on the house and let them walk around on them just to get the feeling - Abbey is fine, I usually do not even leash her when we are on our court as she is trained to stay right next to me and will not move no matter what - she loves my neighbors across the street but when she sees them she knows that she is not allowed to touch the street. I have always carried her across the street so she knows. Miss Magoo is just teaching me patience as she is learning at her own speed. Thank goodness I have a stroller. I also watched some videos on you tube that were helpful. I even thought about getting the leash that has the hooks for two dogs so that she and Abbey would be on the same leash as she might be more likely to follow her sister - any one use these and do you think its worth a try? Benji was 4+ yrs and had never been on a leash according to what I was told. So we leashed up and the first day just sat and discussed it. She learned quickly that she was attached to me. She did not want to go even with me in front.... what I did was carry her to the end of the sidewalk.... she was happy to walk back to the porch.... after doing that a couple of times I carried her to the end of the drive and I let her walk back to the house.... then I carried her to the neighbors and let her walk back.... then the end of the street etc etc. She walks quite well now but always better walking toward home. It needs to be a pleasant event. you might try this: walk her on the leash in the house, where she knows where she is. make it fun. you can throw treats down on the ground in front of her, so she has to take a step or 2 to get it. Some Puppies have a hard time walking someplace they have never been. the big world scares them. Let her drag the leash around the house also. just to get use to it. she needs to know the leash is a good pleasant thing. My Ricky I do not think was ever put on a leash and taken anywhere by his previous owners. He had no clue what a leash was. He is still trying to ajust to riding in the car! I mean most dogs get all excited when they see the leash! not Ricky when I got him... but now, he turns circles when I ask him if he wants to go out for a walk! he helps me now put his harness on. he stand very still with his head up ready for me to put it over his head. He lifts his leg up so i can snap it closed. he waits patiently for me to clip the leash onto the harness.... and off we go!! he does have his moments on walks where he wants to go in another direction than me. so he will pull the leash, and be in a backward position trying to get me to go "that way"... I just stop, and stand my ground, and tell him NO... we are going this way. he gives up soon and on our way we go. I would give her one command in the beginning..."let's go" and then go. Maybe not fast...but purposefully. You stop when you are ready to stop. Right now it sounds like my little Magoo girl is running the show...again! After a few times when she realizes this is not her choice...her decision...she might just go with the program.
