I think it is very important for someone to have a dog. The animal helps them and many times brings back old memories and tons of joy.
I have Dolly & Desi, and I am not 80, but I have put them in my will because I want to make sure that they go to a home where they know the people. I don't want them going to one of my siblings who don't even know them; and I really don't want them going to a shelter. None of us know when God is going to call us home, so we have to be prepared and have our pets included in our wills so that they go where we want them to. Never heard of such a thing. I hate it for him and for a dog that is missing out on a wonderful home. There is no excuse for this. My 80+ year old father-in-law adopted a little 5 yo poodle from the humane society here in Tucson quite a few years ago... they were wonderful companions.... this is so sad, it really is.
