Thank you for letting me join the group! I'm extremely overwhelmed by my
chihuahua right now, and I'm hoping I can find some advice.
My chi is 9 1/2 years old and I have had him since he was 5 weeks old (he's a
rescue). In the last year and half I married and moved into the condo that my
husband owns, which is a 580 sqft studio. Prior to that, I lived in a 1500 sqft
townhome with a roommate.
3 years ago, I decided to start crating my chi at night since he didn't want to
sleep with me and he can't be trusted not to pee on the carpet. I have not had
any issues up until about 2 months ago. Starting then, he barks at all hours of
the night and claws at his crate door to get out. I tried to use a dog pen to
limit his ability to pee on the carpet, but keep him out of the crate, which
worked for about two weeks. Then one night, he seemed to decide he was done
with that and started barking again.
In the last 3 weeks I moved him back to the crate and just ignored him when he
barked. I also increased his walks from 3 ten minute walks to 2 ten minutes and
1 thirty minute before bed. He had back surgery and has the floating knee cap
issue, so I don't want to push him too much.
I slept 2 hours last night due to his barking, which I know has to be bothering
my neighbors.
He doesn't seem to be in pain (never barks like that durring the day) and
nothing has changed in the house for over 6 months. Our routines are the same,
his appetite is the same...I just can't figure out what has spurred this on.
I'm a wreck and need some tips if you have any. the lack of sleep is really
starting to impact my performance and work and my relationship with my husband.
THANK YOU!
Andrea
