It pretty much can't be blocked. The spammers hack into an existing e-mail address to send their garbage. About the only thing that can be done is to place everyone in the group on moderation so that messages can be stopped before they go to the list...this is a huge amount of work for the moderator and takes a lot of time. The moderators of these list are doing it just for the love of the subject and most of us don't have time to moderate every message sent to a list and still have a life.
