If your chi is doing well with what you are feeding…and not packing on any
fat…then that is good. As these are puppies, as they get older you will need
to increase their food in comparison to their weight.

All foods are made different, so the package feeding guidelines can be a place
to start. However, the food that Dolly & Desi eats shows that they should have
at least twice as much as they are eating. Dolly is a free feeder and never
eats her entire food for the day; Desi will eat his two meals and he is doing
good – no extra pounds and not too thin. Some chis are more active than others
so they may require a little more for all the calories that they burn off with
their puppy energy.

If you have any doubts, consult your vet.

Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] THE BEST dry kibble for chihuahuas?

I too am an "inexperienced" chi owner (not to dogs - but to chi's) - I was
worried at first that I wasn't feeding enough (worried about hypoglycemia) -
but seems whatever I'm doing is ok - but will be very interested to hear what
everyone says - I can never learn enough.

Charlotte came home 2 weeks ago tomorrow (she'll be 10 weeks tomorrow) - she is
weened over to Blue Buffalo Basics w/potato for puppies (the Wilderness? kibble
was too high in protein I think and was making poos too soft). She's doing
really well on the Basics - 1 1/2 tbs breakfast, 1 tbs lunch, 1 1/2 tbs dinner
and a little bit before bed so she doesn't go to bed with an empty belly. She
gets little treats when she piddles on pads or when other dogs come in from
their potties/walks. I'll be curious to see if anyone thinks that is not
enough or too much.

CONGRATS on your 1 week and 2 day anniversary of adopting your little one!!!!!

Lynda

Subject: [Chihuahuas] THE BEST dry kibble for chihuahuas?

I apologize if this appears twice.

I adopted Mika (Meeka) one week and 2 days ago. I purchased Wellness super 5
mix (puppy, small breed) for her. She is around one year old. She ia 4.25
pounds. I am feeding her 2 times a day, 12 hours apart, 6:30am and 6:30pm. she
gets 1/4 cup with a tablsp of broth (home made...no salt or spices) She is pb
chihuahua.

Saturday and Sunday morning she woke up throwing up white liquid. I researched
online and found this was common and due to waking up with an empty stomach. So
last night, I cooked rice in some home made chicken broth and gave that to her
as a third meal at 10:00pm.

No problenm this morning at all.

Please consider...I have dachshunds and the 3 of them are true food hounds! So
they eat lite with much restraint!! LOL!

What do you feed your chihuahuas, what fullfills their dietary requirements
best? Do you feed 2 or 3 meals a day? What is the best kibble?

Thanks all, I really appreciate all advice. I am an inexperienced chi
co-habitant and want to give her the best I can afford.
