I talk to myself at the store too  LOL...

I did approach Charlotte differently last night while she was comatose on the
couch (she sleeps harder and longer than any puppy I've ever had)  - I called
her name as I got closer, petted her bum (she doesn't startle when you touch
her) - made kissy noises -  she lifted her sleepy head - I said 'Hi toady' (her
nickname) - she gave a little lick and zonked right back to sleep. Then I was
busy feeding the birds getting everyone ready for bed - must have been too
noisy for her - she got up - pee peed - sleepily made her way to her crate (I
had just put her blankie in from the dryer) - she hopped in and fell
asleep. Before I went up to bed - I reached in - petted her head, gave her a
little belly rub  - said goodnight - shut the door - turned the lights off and
she slept til morn.

I think the issue here was that this is a 3 month old puppy who snapped when
her sleep was disturbed.  Judy, you take care of the rescues and the abused and
it is a different issue.  When I read the initial post, I saw it was a tiny
puppy…that the snapping was when Lynda went to give her a kiss while she is
‘sleeping’.  I think that if I was woken up with a giant’s face next to me, I
would do whatever my instincts tell me to protect myself.  I have found with
mine that touching them or moving them when sleeping is something that I have
to do while talking.  I guarantee that either of mine would growl or snap at
any other time…they would be corrected immediately.  We cannot expect our pups
to be sweet when they wake up being touched or otherwise moved without first
talking.  I always say something like ‘Dolly, Mommy’s going to lay you down in
the chair now.’  She is fine.  The few times that I have just reached to pull
up the blanket before it fell…which was an impulsive move on my part…my sleeve
sweeps over Dolly…that wakes her up and is not a normal feeling and because it
was very late and they were both sleeping, I wasn’t even talking (I only talk
to myself when I go to the store…LOL)

I’ll stand by my statement.  Don’t ask, if you don’t want an answer.  Don’t
blame those who told her straight out.

It is not whether the advise is good or bad, that is a matter again of opinion,
but in polite society, there are ways of offering advise that do not attack or
offend.

Not really Judy, it's just that Diana's reply to Lynda seemed cruel in my
opinion.  I felt sorry for what I perceived as a harsh response to a new
person.

I am fairly quiet on here because I, too, have received critical replies to my
posts.

Whoa! That WAS harsh! Please don't think all of us will respond to you this
way. You have a legitimate concern. The breed has a reputation for tending
toward a yappy, cranky nature.

I understand you to say that you're simply concerned and want advice.

I had similar concerns about Jake. But at 23 months, he is a curious, happy
boy. Neither yappy nor nippy.

Just because she doesnt like people in her face does not mean that she needs to
be disciplined. Dogs have an instinct as to what people they can trust. Also,
has anyone taken the time with her to socialize her ~ gently and over a period
of time, NOT JUST A SNAP ON THE NOSE?????? It sounds like you are being way too
impatiant with her as well as expecting too much too soon. Dogs are like kids,
each personality is different. Maybe she just needs a little extra loving and
gentle care.

I will take her off your hands if you like. I hate to see you both so upset.

Sincerely, Diana

Yeah, I think you are over reacting. Itsy will do this because she does not
like being startled or bothered when she is sleeping. I always make it a
point to say her name name and here girl, come on girl time to go out. She
is fine then. Don't get your feelings hurt, it is not personal, it is a
reaction.

I guess my point is that not all things fit all dogs. Sounds to me like she
just does not want to be bothered while she is resting. Not all dogs will
always be alike.

Ask yourself how she is otherwise? Is this the only time she does that?

Hi Everyone,
I'm noticing some behavior in Charlotte (3 mos chi), that I have never
experienced and do not like. My other 2 dogs are sweet, well behaved,
loving, even tempered loves. I've worked with them & they are such wonderful
dogs-well trained & very respectable. (altho they've trained me well too)
LOL
I've noticed when I lean over to kiss Charlotte when she's sleeping she
snaps @ my face The first time she did this I was shocked! Did it again and
couldn't believe it-my feelings were hurt. Then I went to move her & she
growled. I gave her a 'no' command each time but she doesn't even react to
the command. I tapped her nose once & said 'no', but she just curled up
when back to sleep. I will not accept this behavior so I make a point of
'bothering' her sometimes when she's sleeping so we can work on this.
Anybody have any other ideas?
Lynda
