It is for different reasons, but I feed Desi his food in treat toys. Perhaps you could try that at first. I did have to teach Desi to chew his food three months until he had a 97% or so chewing rate. Then I just put his kibble in treat toys he has fun and cant cram the entire ¼ cup in his throat any more.

I had read that some dogs do that with there food dish because they were in an environment where the food always had bugs, fly's, etc and the poor dog would have to try to eat it's food without consuming a bug. I guess when it goes on for so long that it imprints on there brain and out of habit they can't stop that behavior. It would have to be very traumatic for a dog to live like that day in and day out. Who knows, maybe every time he sees a food dish, he has flash backs? The growling when you try to put a harness on him, may come from being restrained with a towel to many times when they grab them in and out of cages to stud, or do whatever they want to the poor dog. One you can move anywhere and no complaints. The other, a rescue that was scheduled for euthenasia, is something else. I 've had him for 10 yrs now and he still growls if you go to move him in or out of bed. He still checks every treat as tho I was poisoning him and goes thru a whole song and dance with his food dish before he starts eating. He jumps back , sneaks up on it , jumps back again etc. He growls when I put his harness on-no matter how much training I've done with him and how gentle I am that just seems to be ingrained in him. He will also "snap" but it's a fake he never bites, ever.
