I saw the little one today with hubby.  Didn't get any less pitiful looking for sure..but he is eating.  They will do the heartworm test Monday and I will call for the results.  My husband went to take him from me when I was holding him and he screamed.  So some man abuse issues there I think. But he let him hold him and did not struggle as long as I talked to him.  His teeth look good so not very old.  I did talk to her about the inadvisibility of neutering him at this time but she was not receptive.  She said the only ones allowed to take them without a spay/neuter would an established rescue group.  I will talk to the vet tech Monday and see what she has to say..I am sure they dont even spend the money for  preblood work.  Geez// Hubby took one look and told the worker to put our name on him ..he was not going to let anymore happen to this little one. When I get a release date I will go from there to our vet and see what he has to say about him and we will go from there..Wish I could have taken him out of there..So cold and noisy..Makes me sad..

Our shelter will let people do a "foster to adopt" if there are health issues that need to be resolved before the spay/neuter can be done.  They sign a contract that says they will bring the dog back for the surgery.
Maybe that is a possibility?

I know that it is a law for most shelters to have a dog neutered and spayed before releasing them, but it seems so heatless to put him through that in his condition, especially being so underweight and I might add scary. Maybe you could ask to sign a statement that in a couple of months when he is in better health that you swear to have him neutered?  It's worth the asking. Poor thing has suffered so much already.

Yes I agree, quarantining him would be the best thing, especially if the worst scenario is treatable mange, and or kennel cough on top of that. Pam, I don't know if you have ever handled a dog that has an undiagnosed skin condition, but to play it safe, the best thing to do is wear plastic gloves and keep him in a blanket so as not to contaminate your clothes when you will also be handling your own dogs when you get home.

So good to hear that the other chi is going to be rescued. What shelter is this?

BTW, how has Paco been doing lately? Did you ever get around to lowering his protein content?

Yes they are sending a vet tech over Monday so  am sure that is what will happen.  They are not supposed to release them until they are spayed or neutered but I cant imagine they could do anything to him in that shape.  I know I will have to have a top to bottom physical done by my vet if he ends up coming home with me..Of course he will have to be quarantined from the other dogs until we know what is going on health wise and skin wise.  I think he is  smooth coat..but it is just so weird and chopped up and sad looking it is hard to tell.  Best case scenario is that he has a bunch of worms and perhaps a yeast infection.  It is amazing the spirit of these guys.  All that he has been through and as beat up as he is and his little tail is still wagging..geez..I have my name up for his adoption already..so they wont put him down yet..It was my understanding the bigger chi was going to be adopted by one of the Chi rescue groups..They usually scoop them up pretty quickly if they are at all  viable..As far as being housebroken..aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh hope so lol

Oh Pam, I sure hope it works out!  He looks like maybe he is suppose to be a LH? If he is in a kill shelter, and unless you adopt or a rescue does quickly, he won't have a prayer being in that shape. The shelters down there to my knowledge, don't due a full blood test to see if his organs are okay. They use the heartworm kit to test a few drops of blood.  If he has whip worm, which you cannot see in the poop, that can and usually does make their fur fall out, plus he is lacking nutrition from being under weight. That's the way Princess was when I got her, plus she had 2 other worms, and in 3 months with the right meds and a good diet and Liper-Derm, which helped tremendously, she was looking like a healthy dog again. That poor baby....!!  I also pray for the bigger chi too, that she gets adopted.

Prayers being sent!!!

Very sweet.  My news of the day.  I "MAY" be getting a new baby.  Very tentative.  At our local county shelter there is this little white chi, very similar to my tiny Bino but perhaps a bit longer.  I get updates on Chis arriving..not that I am ever looking of course, lol, and this guy just came in.  Ok, hate shelters anyway..big barking dogs everywhere..scared and in terrible condition.  I go in and there with all the pitts and everything huddling in a corner is this filthy, emaciated, scared, little guy with some kind of skin disease marking him everywhere.  He was found huddling under a shed and brought in.  Worker said no data on him as of yet..he has not even been seen by a vet yet. He is in a cage with another chi, perhaps brought in together, as this bigger chi is definately protecting him.  She had to restrain the bigger chi with a rope to get the white one out.  I just scooped him up off the floor and huddled him right against me..skin scrunge by damned.  He was shaking so bad..My God this little one is seriously all bones and big eyes.  The worker looked at me like I was nuts but after a minute he stopped shaking and raised his little head and gave me a kiss..Have no idea if he is just starved or starved and/or sick but he is such a mess.  No idea of age but he let me take a little peek at his front teeth and they are white with a little tiny plaque so not a puppy but not old either.  He is going to be heartworm tested Monday and he will have to be neutered but don't know how much else they wll do to him.  Probably not much..it is an as is proposition at those shelters. Hubby is going to look at him with me tomorrow and see what he thinks.  I warned him of his condition. She asked me if I would take him if he was heartworm positive and I said yes but not if he is in kidney failure or imminent death is on the horizon.
I will know more tomorrow when hubby goes with me.  Pray for this little one,
