Hi everyone,
I have a 3&1/2 month-old boy chihuahua. I've had him for only 2 weeks and here
is what happened so far.
I have him confined to the kitchen when we are not watching him.
When he first came home from the breeder, HE decided that he wanted to go in a
certain area of the kitchen. This is not the area where I had chosen to put
down a pad but nonetheless I went with it. I moved the pad to the area where
he seemed to prefer going. I also use(d) the allure or spray that attracts
them to go on the pad...I use Nature's Miracle brand with pheremones. So he
basically just started going consistently on the pad in that area....THAT WAS
GREAT AND IN THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF COMING HOME!!!!
But Mommy tried to make some seemingly minor changes and ran into serious
problems with Otto's potty training. First, I decided that it would be nice to
have the pads positioned on a tray. I changed nothing at all with the
exception that I used the pads and spray on a tray with a small 3/4" lip. I
put this arrangement in the same area even though it was not my first choice
but where he had initially decided to go as mentioned above. Otto did not go
for this tray thing!!! Suddenly he stopped going on the pad and went on the
floor. He could not figure out that the pad was simply on the tray only 3/4
inch up???? He did not like it???? It affected his instincts about going
because it was off the ground where dogs generally sniff?????? So then I gave
up on the tray altogether.
He consistently refused to use it and was going on the floor.
Then I tried moving the pad over just a couple of feet from where
it was originally. DISASTER!! He started going all over the kitchen.
Boooohooooo!!
I always remember what The Dog Whisperer says about dogs and their
owners...It is the owners who do not understand and need training.
Where did I go wrong???? I also want to add that when he did go in various
other areas on the floor, I cleaned thoroughly so as not to leave any odors or
traces which might cause him to go on the floor again. What did Mommy do????
Anyone have any ideas?????? I would
ultimately like to make use of a pad tray in a slightly different area of the
kitchen but not too close to his food/water/bed.
Thanks for any help and info.
