I am a huge advocate of spaying and neutering..just walking through the
shelters will do that to you.  My last two rescues were on death row and both
not neutered.  Does it send a red flag up for me when someone does not spay or
neuter their pet?  Yes because a large majority of these people do not care for
their pet properly and that is part of it.  Not only does it put the female at
risk for getting pregnant but in the male's case it is added incentive for them
to run and get lost.  Hormones rule.  Also any vet will tell you not spaying or
neutering adds greatly to the odds of getting cancers in both sexes.  Add that
all up and there is that red flag.  But that said sometimes we have to do the
best we can. There are options out there to help for those who truly seek them
out not only for spaying and/or neutering but lost cost vaccinations.  I do not
think it is a case of prejudging..more a case of making the informed decision.
There is too
much evidence to ignore and if you do, then a lot of people are going to think
you do not care.

Barry...
It is WRONG to prejudge.
You are labeling everyone who does not spay/neuter their dog as an animal
abuser???? How is that animal abuse, letting her chi go the way God made her.
Perhaps to some good dog owners, spaying or neutering a dog is abuse if there
is nothing medically wrong with the little dog.
Yes...both of mine are spayed/neutered. I knew that I didn't want to breed
them; and I had to give up things to get them spayed/neutered. With only
Dolly, I got her spayed...I had no intention of breeding her, and it was
because where I live all dogs/cats must be spayed/neutered by the time that
they are 3 months old. The vet wouldn't do it then because she was too tiny,
and so she was 5 1/2 months when she was spayed. Desi was neutered at 3 months
even though he was small because he had a potentially serious problem with his
testicle. I would have had him neutered anyway, but it was MY choice as the
owner to get them spayed/neutered.
Someone that posts that their dog is in heat, is not a sign of being an animal
abuser. And, if someone was an animal abuser, do you think that they would
post anything on an open forum.
IMHO, if you have a companion dog that has no access to getting out, and the
owner is responsible, then it is their choice.
I know that there are a lot of animals in the shelters. I know that there are
a lot of Chis in the shelters. I know that some who rescue take the
'underdogs' and they have suffered abuse and have the signs of it. Some are in
the shelter because they were not trained correctly and become a safety risk to
small children and other people because they are 'ankle biters'. Some are in
the shelters because of the ECONOMY. Those that have bad personalities, I
wouldn't consider their owners abusers; and those who have had to make a choice
between feeding themselves and their family or feeding the dog and going
without food themselves...what are they??? Are they abusers??? I would think
that if they kept the dog and didn't feed their children it would be child
abuse.
Just my two cents worth.
