This was discussed on a thread on this list starting on March 27 this year. The upshot was that no normal user of CHIRP is known to have actually bricked a Yaesu. One experimenter did brick a radio while performing the analyses needed to create a new driver, once.
This is roughly analogous to damaging the engine of your car. You won't if you just drive it, but you do run a risk if you disassemble it.
