No, that's not necessary.

At the bottom of every list message are links for managing your subscription.

One of them is this:
http://intrepid.danplanet.com/mailman/listinfo/chirp_users

At the bottom, enter your email address and click on "Unsubscribe or
edit options". Next, you have to enter your list password, which you
probably forgot, so you can click on "Remind". Don't use a
super-secret password here because the login is insecure.

Once you have your password you can log in. Then you can see your
subscription options. Change them as required then log out.

Alternatively, as described here
https://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/node27.html you
can send an email to the list server. You still need your list
password:

Send a message to:

[email protected]

With the content:

set authenticate <password>
set digest off

to turn it off or

set authenticate <password>
set digest plain
or
set digest mime

to turn it on.

I just tried it and it works.
