You could try putting a USB soundcard in the computer where sound is out. Alternatively, if you are running Linux on the computer that has sound, you can forward X over ssh to allow GUI programs running on the shack machine to run on the machine with sound. The -X (dash capital x) option added to your ssh command would do it. The screen reader shouldn't have any trouble with it, since it's I distinguishable from having it run on the local Linux box. C.
