| No, hyper-v is a full hypervisor, just like VMware.
You install the feature, go into the hyper-v manager, and point it at a downloaded iso of the is you wish to install (or CD/DVD), and when it runs you have a fully-functional OS install, just as if you had installed the OS on a blank desktop.
I think you are confusing Hyper-V with the so-called Linux Subsystem that integrates Linux commands, libraries, and applications into the windows environment.
The above links might help understand the differences. Ken
Isn't hyper-V just give a Linux CLI?
I am guessing most folks prefer Chirp in a GUI
environment.

Or you can take the opportunity to
just run Linux in the VM - by the way Windows 10 and Windows 7 include Hyper-V,
as an alternative to running VMware.
As always, there are many ways to do almost anything with
computers.

What you can do is to install VmWare, and
download windows 10, and authorize windows 10 with your windows 7 key,
and when you want to launch Chirp, first launch windows 10 in a
Hypervisor like VmWare, and install Chirp there.
I prefer 7 too, so I did the opposite, installed
10 as the host, then put 7 in VmWare as the guest OS, and use 7 for just about
everything, and if I have to use 10, I toggle out of 7 and use
10.

Tony, you are correct although just because Microsoft doesn't
support Windows 7 doesn't mean a program can't still work on Windows 7. there
are a lot of hams I know that are still using Win-7 like I am and it runs very
stable for all my applications except Chirp-Next. So now I have to use the
older version of Chirp and am forced to get a newer machine with Windows 10 or
11 just to use the Next version of Chirp. Then I have to reinstall all the
other programs onto the new machine. We hams are cheap and/or live on a fixed
income. Look at the majority of hams. I do like the fact there is a new
version of Chirp, I just wish I could use it on my machine. i was even tempted
to send in a donation until I found out I couldn't use it. Like I said, I do
wish it would have been more apparent that the new next version of Chirp will
not run on Win-7.

To be more accurate, it is made for Linux, Mac OS-X and
Windows. Microsoft no longer support Windows 7.
