The "updated" method proved successful in the end: run chrome2k.reg, then the installer (which will eventually crash), then unchrome.reg, and then the browser. Every time you start it, there is a message: "Google Chrome does not support Windows 2000. Some features may not work." However, as far as I can tell, web browsing is fully functional, and the only thing that does not work correctly is Options menu: buttons don't look right and combo boxes are partially rendered and virtually unusable.
