Had the same problem with different versions. IMHO this ocurred if  
something went
wrong while chrome is being updated. A quick search in google brought me  
the info
that new_chrome.exe is there waiting you to shutdown chrome so it can be  
used to
update the browser. But it needs also two registry changes to make the  
magic. Maybe
the registry wasn't updated, I didn't tried to find out. I just deleted
new_chrome.exe and chrome.exe started nicely and smile came back...
