This also fails in Safari (and Opera, FWIW). I think it's probably related  
to the
code editor javascript widget that iGoogle is using called codepress -  
http://codepress.sourceforge.net. If you visit that project's page in  
Firefox and
then in Safari or Chrome, you see that the demos aren't working in  
Safari/Chrome but
do in Firefox.

Looks like they have a bug report about codepress not working in  
Chrome/Safari, and
one of the developers says he is working on it.
