I have the same problem on XP sp2, so after reading this thread, I thought  
I would
try something. I started chrome and did nothing else, task manager was  
already open.
So chrome.exe started and ran @ 4 - 7% cpu usage for about 5 or 6 minutes,  
then it
started another chrome.exe and went to 100% usage. Every thing else was  
just as
Bengt has stated.

Hope this might help. It is really irritating.
