Comment #5 on issue 6001 by choicesmade: HTML tables should have a specific context-menu to allow opertions like sorting. http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=6001
I have to say that you're making a very valid point. I had in mind the sorting of simple text- only tables such as plain reports. If the table is full of javascript, rearranging the DOM might indeed be risky and cause unwanted side effects. So maybe this feature doesn't belong in the browser itself, as people could be surprised to see a basic feature break a web page. However it could definitely exist as an extension - when they are implemented. On the plugin- side of things, people expect features that will make their browsing easier. I would guess that the majority of internet users don't care if the DOM is changed by the browser or any plugin/extension, as long as the feature helps them. The resizable text area is one of them, and I have to say I love it. I use it almost daily (and right now as I'm typing this comment) and this is one of the many reasons I use chromium: innovation. Even if this is not to everyone's liking, plugins that change the DOM are becoming incredibly popular, probably because a lot of websites have usability issues, or simply because ten thousand users can come up with a lot more ideas that a few designers. The Skype plugin was a basic example, but I have to mention GreaseMonkey which is the quintessential DOM-modification plugin - and a very popular one. Like you said, I guess the hardest part is to draw the line between "browser feature", "extension" and "iffy extension". So what is the community's point of view on this? Where is Chromium heading in terms of features and extensions? It's hard to find the right balance between simplicity and innovation. -- You received this message because you are listed in the owner or CC fields of this issue, or because you starred this issue.
