It’s also a performance issue as well. Opening a new tab causes an annoying  
delay
because it has to be populated with quite a bit of data. Allowing the user  
to set it
to be blank (like most people want, and most browsers do) would make  
opening a new
tab—which most people do because they want to navigate to a page they have  
in mind—
faster.
