Ok, now I feel stupid. I totally forgot that my company's proxy accepts  
both NTLM and
BASIC authentication.

I confirm that the current DEV release does authenticate with BASIC.  
Firefox uses
BASIC too.  So this isn't a regression.

I get the "The server xxx at xxx requires a username and password." with  
Chrome DEV.
