Comment #11 on issue 8695 by cbruscato: Download troubles

7) Wishlist: Either allow the user to copy the download link or go back to
the
originating website for the download in a new tab.

These don't really seem like alternates for each other; allow me to
explain. If we
allow the end user to "copy download link" this doesn't assist the end user
in
restarting the download anymore than a "Restart" button would. Which is far
more
useful. A "Copy Download Link" button would allow for easy distribution of
files
through E-Mail or IM; but from a web developers point of view, it aids in
hot-
linking, which is not something I am sure we want to encourage.

Implementing some type of "SnapBack" like download funtionality, that will
allow you
to go back to the originating page for the download sounds cool; but how
should a
person actually implement it? Today's web download mostly come from CDNs
(which
constantly change their links and servers that the file is hosted on) or
File Sharing
sites which typically will have you enter a captcha and then be assigned a
temporary
download link which auto-starts only once, refreshing the page results in
a "you
already downloaded this file" issue. Think back to last week, how many
times did you
download a file from a "static" website that has a direct, never changing
link to the
download?

I think some public input on this would be warranted before spending any
time working
on this particular phase of this bug. Recommend focus be put on "blocking"
bugs like
the download units, page link issues, and cancel button on paused
downloads; we can
revisit some of these suggestions on a latter build.
