This has never worked the way you describe it - if it did, that was a bug.

Current behavior is as intended.

If you want, you can just switch to using Ctrl+G (or F3) all the time,  
because if the
Find box is empty, that will just open the Find box allowing you to  
type 'e' and
press Ctrl+G again.
