To help you check your hypothesis about DNS.... In addition to a status message at the lower left corner of a window (which might tell you if the window is waiting for DNS).... When DNS activity is in progress, the throbber rotates counter clockwise (slowly). Once the DNS resolution is complete, and the tab is waiting for the download, the throbber rotates clockwise (faster).
