I wonder if this is bad browser sniffing? My experience from Camino is that the way apple does those widgets is to use their custom type="search" (which these are) and rely on browsers that don't support it to fall back to a standard text field, which they then augment with styling to hide the borders and add some custom imagery around it to make it look like the rounded search field.
