I wonder if this is bad browser sniffing? My experience from Camino is that  
the way
apple does those widgets is to use their custom type="search" (which these  
are) and rely
on browsers that don't support it to fall back to a standard text field,  
which they then
augment with styling to hide the borders and add some custom imagery around  
it to
make it look like the rounded search field.

 From the screenshot, this looks like they are styling it thinking we don't  
support
type="search", when in fact we do.
