I like the original idea - the default behaviour should be to save the file temporarily (until the tab that opened the file is closed, along with the downloads bar along the bottom), and the user should have the ability to easily save that file to a default directory or to a chosen one, after or during download. I think the issue with firefox is that it still records a file that was saved temporarily in your downloads list, where the expected behaviour is that files are accessible.
