Elliot, feel free to look at this if you want to. I took a few stabs at it
but didn't
make much progress. The best way to do this is probably to reparent the
status bubble
into a override-redirect/popup window when it needs to slide out of the
way, but keep
it in the browser window the rest of the time so that it won't be jumpy
when the
window gets dragged around.
