Interesting. I see why it's not working (it can't figure out what desktop  
environment
you're running), but now I don't see why it would ever work for you at  
all. :)

If you could run that command again sometime when it *is* working, that  
would be
great. Then I could compare the output and figure out why it does work  
sometimes.

It might also be useful to know what the output of "export" is in a  
terminal, and what
the command "xdg-open http://www.google.com"; does (especially if it doesn't  
open
google.com in your current default browser).
