Comment #9 on issue 11785 by andrewflanders: No way to disable tabs in Chrome http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=11785
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I feel that Google is pushing tabs in order to de- emphasize the Windows GUI environment and force users to become accustomed to staying within the Chrome GUI, nudging users away from rich apps towards web based computing. I suspect they're essentially creating a miniature OS within Windows and trying to give users as few reasons as possible to leave. I can think of at least two objective reasons tabs are inferior to independent windows: 1) They force you to have a stack of evenly sized windows. With larger monitors and dual monitor hookups becoming common, people like to have multiple windows open with various sizes and offsets so that email, news and other things can all be seen with a simple glance. Imagine that you used to have a huge desk, lots of space for your coffee cup, reports, calculator, references, that has now been replaced by a small 8"x11" platform, only large enough to hold a single stack of papers, and in order to look at a paper you must place it directly on top of the stack. You can only see one paper at a time. This is tabbed browsing, is it really "something better"? 2) It forces you to use a task bar that's specific to web pages (the tab bar) which is only readily available if you have already a web browser open. Suppose you are doing Photoshop work for a web site and you have to tab over to the website to see the result of your work, but now you want to check your email. The "legacy behavior" would be to simply click your "Gmail" browser on the task bar, that's ONE action. The "new and improved" behavior is to first click/tab to Chrome, then click the "Gmail" tab, that's TWO actions. Tabs are 1) less versatile and 2) less efficient. Correct me if I'm wrong. -- You received this message because you are listed in the owner or CC fields of this issue, or because you starred this issue.
