@ aftigr: Can you tell me what kind of router or firewall you're using? Perhaps your router is pushed into a bad state, and changing preferences won't help once that happens. Consider a) disabling proxy auto-detect, and also disabling DNS prefetching; b) reboot your router to be sure it is in a known clean state; c) try to see if you're still having problems.
