You do bring an interesting example. But, as has already been established,  
a rollover close button is less than
user-friendly; it would be far better to have the close button  
always-visible, so you can see where you're aiming
when you first touch your mouse. I think back to my grandma (a loyal  
Macintosh fan) to whom it would *never*
occur to go looking to close a tab on its icon.
Then again, if Adium, which could be considered one of the definitive Mac  
apps, has its tabs display a close
button over the icon, then maybe it's not such a big problem.
