I talked with Aleksey Shlyapnikov (he works on Toolbar). He mentioned that we could probably bypass the normalization process (detection would still work properly in (99% of the cases). Then it simply becomes a matter of commenting out the Windows bits and use the system conversion from wstring to UTF8.
