Comment #12 on issue 6459 by TerryMorrow: "Search Google for ..." should
open tab in background
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=6459

I can't agree more with OP and others who have posted here, and must say how
disappointed I am with the attitude Ben has taken on this issue. I came to
this page
to see if I could resolve this issue that has slightly bugged me since I
can remember
using chromium. The biggest problem for me is the inconsistency between the
behaviors of r.c.-> "open in new tab" and r.c.->"search google". In my
opinion, they
perform similar functions for similar reasons, for example if I see an
interesting
link or keyword that I want to check out later, I highlight or just
right-click, and
open the page in a new tab for later reading so I can continue with what I
am doing
now. This works fine if you use the first option, but whenever you do the
second,
the focus is taken to the new tab, breaking you away from whatever you were
previously doing, making you search for whatever word, line, paragraph,
even which
tab you were on to resume where you left off.

This isn't a big issue, or really that annoying, but it's like a tiny rock
in your
shoe - It only slightly interferes, but it interferes with such a
fundamental and
commonly used feature, that it builds up over time. Any relief or
improvement to it,
for instance adding a setting to toggle this, adding an extension, pointing
someone in
the right direction to do create one themselves, or a simple "sorry guys,
we just
don't have the time" would've been greatly appreciated. "Nope."/Wontfix is
what we
get instead - and it comes across like a slap in the face.
