I also tested posters with aac, using nero
neroaacenc -he -if trek2.wav -of trek2.he.mp4
neroaactag trek2.he.mp4 -add-cover:front:trek2.mp4.jpg
The trek2.he.mp4 plays okay with chrome. In itunes I can see the poster.
So the issue is specific to mp3 file format.
