John, I'll try to reproduce the error as you suggested tomorrow. In
the mean time, I enlisted from another (much cleaner) Win7-x64 box and
was able to build successfully.

With respect to your question about the crash, please refer to my
initial post. Yes, gclient sync finished successfully.
