I too am having problems with "observe". Found this thread now, trying to find a solution. :) My problem appears in the prototype slider.js http://trac.symfony-project.org/browser/branches/1.1/data/web/sf/prototype/js/slider.js?rev=7855 where I am currently finding a workaround by changing the loop starting at line 75. Right now it works fine but without using "observe".
