As was said earlier, this could easily be caused by updates to the safe browsing database. I'm not sure what the current state of the options panel is on Linux, but if it's there, you can disable phishing and malware protection to turn this off (not recommended of course). The other obvious possibility is that the web pages you have open in your browser are using XHR to make new requests periodically.
