Search engines are added to the omnibox using the OpenSearch specifications:

http://www.opensearch.org/Home

So it's not an issue of Chrome doing anything; those products would
have to implement opensearch.

I'm not sure if opensearch supports transmitting data in an encrypted
or even per-user basis; I don't know that opensearch allows for
transmission of your credentials to the server. Maybe someone who
knows more could say more.
