I have enabled synchronization to the gmail account using the in-built gears. There is an ugly workaround I use whenever I get this error and so far it seems to have worked . Go to any google groups page say http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-discuss?pli=1 and sign out of the account . Then sign back on, this loop is no longer the problem for this session.
