Techcrunch, Lifehacker, and the usual suspects all ran the story today about how Chrome might support desktop notifications in a future version. in the design document referenced, it stated that on Mac systems, the notifications could be routed through Growl and on Linux routed to DBus/libnotify.
my question/request is: why not route to a notification handler on Windows as well? Growl for Windows (http://www.growlforwindows.com) or Snarl (http://www.fullphat.net) both offer similar functionality to Growl on OSX. in fact, Growl on Windows is built on an open cross- platform protocol (GNTP - http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/help/gntp.aspx) that will also soon be supported by Growl on OSX. if Chrome sent its notifications in GNTP format, then any GNTP-compatible display app could be used to handle the notifications. a few of the obvious benefits are 1) a single implementation for both Windows and Mac platforms, and 2) user control over the notifications using an app they are already using to manage other notifications. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Chromium Discussion mailing list: [email protected] View archives, change email options, or unsubscribe: http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-discuss -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
