Extensions in Chrome/Chromium have come a long way in the last year.
Very easy to write and use (if you know what you are doing and have
some savvy) .  I think what end users are likely waiting for and may
cause the "confusion" is a direct user interface (like greasemonkey or
add-ons in Firefox) that allows a user to easily install and use the
extensions/scripts.  Is a UI slated for dev version 5?  I was told not
to expect one in dev, version 4 some time ago.   Thanks!
