I use Google's Gmail Notifier client. It doesn't have to run in the
background, I'm guessing it just uses a registry edit like most users
mess with to set mailto. In XP it works just as it should (install,
set mailto to enabled) but in Windows 7 you have to open the program,
disable the mailto support, then reopen the program with "run as
administrator" and re-enable mailto support. After that you don't have
to run the notifier program; mailto should work.
