When clicking on the icon, rather than opening up GMail, it has a popup listing your current inbox/label count. Within the popup, you can still click on the Inbox button to open GMail. It also has a link that allows you to set a couple options: you can change the interval delay (how often it checks for new messages), and also have it check for labels in addition to the inbox.
