I saw both around the same time last year. I think you'll find the average person much more entertained by *The Gathering Storm*. It's short (less than 2 hours), it has some known actors, and it is very modern in its filming style. I watched it with my wife and she was very entertained even though her interest in Churchill is minimal. The negatives are that there is a lot hacked out of the story. Sometimes, there is no notion of time, so events are strung together without the viewer realizing that months or even years have passed.
*The Wilderness Years*, although the series is more complete and accurate, is tougher to get people to watch. For Americans, we have a tough time understanding British accents, especially in poor sound quality. It took me most of the first episode to get use to the accents and follow along. The series is long and drawn out, but it is complete. By complete, I mean you'll see Churchill's efforts to keep India in the Empire and his support of Prince Edward. If you are interested in the full story of Churchill during this time period, you'll love it. I watched the whole thing over the course of a few days and then purchased my own copy. They are each great in their own respect as they both serve a purpose. I hope that helps.
