In Rebecca Hunt's first novel, it is 1964 and Esther is living alone in
Battersea, working as a lowly librarian in the Houses of Parliament. Her
monotonous existence is disrupted when she advertises for a lodger and an
enormous black dog takes the room. The dog is the eponymous Mr Chartwell.
